What is "Get On It"?

"Get on it" is a transport initiative funded by Big Lottery Year of Young People funding & The Holywood Trust for young people in the Stewartry area of D&G to look at potential solutions to the transport crisis. Young people have said that this is the biggest aspect of living here that they wish they could change, adding to isolation & mental health issues, impacting employment, learning and socialising and preventing young people in the area from feeling like they can make a success of their lives in the area.

The initiative has brought together young people from the Glenkens, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Gatehouse of Fleet to design and run a pilot a pilot transport scheme to help them move more freely around these areas. After numerous consultations and lots of planning, they have decided on a return Sunday bus route from Dalry to Kirkcudbright, via numerous stops on the way. The first pilot will run for ten weeks, followed by a period of evaluation, before the final pilot launches in 2020. At the end of this project, young people will report their findings to local council representatives and transport providers in order to impact decision making.

Who can use the "Get On It" buses?

All of the buses are for young people aged 12-25.

To use the buses, the young person needs to register with CatStrand Youth, gain parental consent (for U16s only) and agree to (and abide by) the passenger code of conduct which young people have created. Please note that young people will be turned away if they do not meet these requirements.

The Passenger Code of Conduct

Be polite and respectful to the staff and one another.

Wear seatbelts.

Don’t distract the driver.

Don’t stand up on the seats, or put your feet on the seats.

Don’t make a mess – use the bin provided.

Do not bring any drugs or alcohol on board.

How can I register and show parental consent?

Everyone who books a ticket online will need to register and agree to having parental consent as part of the booking process.

However, if you'd like to register for the service without booking a ticket in advance, you can do so here:

Do I need to book a place and how can I do this?

No, though it is advised if you want to be sure of getting a place. You can book a free ticket until 12 hours before your chosen bus leaves. After this time, bus seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

You can book a ticket here. Note that you can only book one ticket at a time, to ensure everyone has registered.

Is there a charge for the buses?

No, it's free!

Is there an adult on board?

Yes. As well as the driver, a responsible adult will be on board every service to check registration and carry out evaluation.

Please note that as a transport service, we can only take responsibility for the care of the young person whilst they are on the bus, not when they reach their destination.

What is the best platform to follow for any bus updates?

In the case of any cancellations or changes, details will be published on our CatStrand Youth facebook page and, is time allows, on our Instagram account. If you have booked a ticket in advance, we will also email you in the event of a cancellation.

When and where does the bus run?

For the first pilot, the buses are running every Sunday until 23rd February inclusive. The Dalry - Kirkcudbright bus also runs in the evening on the first Friday of the month. This ties in with a monthly disco for ages 13-17 called KBTFEST happening in Kirkcudbright.

The times are below. Please be aware that the buses run to a schedule and we cannot take responsibility for young people missing the buses. Make sure you are at the stop on time.
